A1

BEGINNER

Learners can handle the basics: introduce themselves, say where they’re from, order a coffee, understand simple questions, and recognise familiar words in slow, clear speech. They begin to pronounce Italian sounds correctly and follow very short, predictable conversations.

ELEMENTARY

Learners can manage everyday tasks: order food in a restaurant, ask for directions, talk about routines, describe their family, shop for essentials, and understand short, simple conversations. They can express basic needs and preferences and follow slow speech on familiar topics.

Learners can function independently: book accommodation, explain problems while travelling, talk about past experiences, future plans, and opinions, and follow the main points of conversations at normal speed. They can keep a conversation going even when they don’t know a word.

B2

Learners can communicate confidently: discuss a wide range of topics, follow films or podcasts with standard speech, explain ideas clearly, and interact naturally with native speakers. They can handle debates, give opinions with reasons, and understand more complex texts.

C1

ADVANCED

Learners can operate comfortably in demanding situations: follow long discussions, understand detailed arguments, express themselves fluently and precisely, and adapt their language to academic, professional, or social contexts. They can use idiomatic expressions naturally.

C2

Learners can do anything a highly educated native speaker can: understand virtually all spoken and written Italian, summarise complex information, switch tone effortlessly, and express subtle, nuanced ideas with ease. Communication feels natural, flexible, and effortless.
